Perfect Christmas Roast Turkey Recipe
This classic recipe ensures a moist, flavorful turkey with a crispy golden skin, perfect for your Christmas table.Ingredients:
For the Turkey:
- 1 whole turkey (12-14 lbs), thawed
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 lemons, halved
- 1 large onion, quartered
- 2 carrots, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 1 head garlic, halved
- Fresh rosemary, thyme, and sage sprigs
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Herb Butter:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp fresh rosemary, chopped
- 2 tbsp fresh thyme, chopped
- 1 tbsp fresh sage, chopped
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp lemon zest
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Turkey:
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C).
- Remove the turkey neck and giblets, rinse the turkey inside and out under cold water, and pat dry with paper towels.
- Gently loosen the skin over the breast and legs using your fingers, being careful not to tear it.
2. Make the Herb Butter:
- In a small bowl, mix melted butter, olive oil, minced garlic, rosemary, thyme, sage, paprika, lemon zest, salt, and pepper.
3. Season the Turkey:
- Rub the softened butter under the skin and all over the turkey.
- Rub the herb butter generously over the skin.
- Stuff the cavity with halved lemons, onion, garlic, and herb sprigs.
- Scatter the chopped carrots, celery, and onions in the roasting pan.
4. Roast the Turkey:
- Place the turkey breast-side up on a rack in the roasting pan.
- Roast uncovered in the preheated oven, basting every 30-40 minutes with pan drippings, until the internal temperature in the thickest part of the breast reaches 165°F (75°C). This takes about 15 minutes per pound.
- If the skin browns too quickly, tent the turkey loosely with foil.
5. Rest and Carve:
- Remove the turkey from the oven and let it rest for 20-30 minutes before carving. This allows the juices to redistribute.
- Carve and serve with your favorite Christmas sides!

Pair the turkey with:
- Stuffing or dressing
- Mashed potatoes with gravy
