Anzac Biscuit Recipe: How to Make Traditional Crunchy Anzac Biscuits

Anzac Biscuits are traditional Australian and New Zealand cookies made from simple ingredients like oats, flour, sugar, and coconut. These crunchy, golden biscuits are associated with the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) soldiers and are popular during Anzac Day commemorations. They’re easy to make, require no eggs, and have a rich, caramel flavor thanks to golden syrup.

Ingredients:

 Rolled Oats: 1 cup

 All-purpose Flour: 1 cup

 Desiccated Coconut: ¾ cup

 Brown Sugar: ¾ cup

 Golden Syrup: 2 tbsp

 Butter: 125g (about ½ cup)

 Baking Soda: ½ tsp

 Boiling Water: 2 tbsp

Making Process:

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 160°C (320°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.

Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine rolled oats, flour, desiccated coconut, and brown sugar. Stir to ensure all ingredients are evenly distributed.

Step 3: Melt Butter and Syrup

In a small saucepan, melt the butter and golden syrup over low heat. Stir until fully melted and combined.

Step 4: Prepare the Baking Soda Mixture

In a small bowl, dissolve baking soda in boiling water. Once dissolved, pour it into the melted butter and syrup mixture. The combination will foam up slightly, so mix quickly.

Step 5: Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

Pour the butter mixture into the bowl of dry ingredients. Mix thoroughly until the dough is fully combined. The mixture should be slightly crumbly but come together when pressed.

Step 6: Shape the Biscuits

Roll tablespoon-sized portions of dough into balls and place them on the prepared baking tray. Press each ball lightly with your fingers or the back of a spoon to flatten them slightly. Leave space between the biscuits as they will spread during baking.

Step 7: Bake

Bake the biscuits for 12-15 minutes, or until they turn golden brown. For a chewier texture, bake for less time. For a crunchier biscuit, bake a little longer.

Step 8: Cool and Store

Once baked, remove the tray from the oven and let the biscuits cool on the tray for 5 minutes. Transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container to keep them fresh and crunchy.

Tips for Perfect Anzac Biscuits:

Golden Syrup Substitute:  If golden syrup is not available, you can substitute it with honey or light molasses, but it will slightly alter the flavor.

Texture Preference:  For a chewier biscuit, reduce the baking time by a few minutes. For a crispier, more traditional texture, bake until golden brown.

Long Shelf Life:  These biscuits store well for a long time, making them perfect for gifting or enjoying over several days.

How to Serve:

Anzac Biscuits are best enjoyed with a cup of tea or coffee. They’re perfect for an afternoon snack or as part of a special Anzac Day tribute. These biscuits also make a great addition to gift baskets or a homemade cookie platter.

Special Tip:-

you can substitute honey for golden syrup in Anzac Biscuits, but it will slightly alter the flavor and texture. Golden syrup has a deeper, caramelized flavor compared to honey, so using honey will give the biscuits a milder, sweeter taste.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
  • Flavor: Honey will make the biscuits taste a bit sweeter and lighter compared to the rich, deep flavor of golden syrup.
  • Texture: Honey tends to be slightly more liquid, so you may need to adjust the flour or oats slightly to maintain the right dough consistency. This will ensure the biscuits hold their shape and bake properly.
Overall, honey can be a good alternative if golden syrup is not available!
